Paquita Galore
1/9/15
Hello there!
So since we went on break in December, our Acting elective has been working on audition pieces. Now, these pieces could be done as a song, a dance, a monologue or anything in-between. I personally did a dance piece. I performed Paquita 4 from the famous ballet Paquita. It was a nice change because even though i love acting, dance is where i really feel comfortable and able to express myself. I chose this variation because of its irresistibly catchy tune as well as all of the movements are light and airy, having a different quality than the pieces that we have been doing recently. I wanted to convoy i certain quality of happiness, a sort of confidence. Mainly, i wanted to do something that was much less heavy than pieces we have most of the year.
My goals of this routine were fairly simple. To combine my technique as a dancer as well as bring in emotion and feeling to the dance. When i first started this excursion to perform the piece I automatically thought that I would do it on pointe shoes. But, as I practiced I soon realized that I wasn't in the best shape for pointe shoes and would be more stressed about what my feet were doing rather than what my face was showing. So instead of challenging my technique as much, I made a personal decision to focus on my face, because after all this is an acting elective. Although pointe shoes look pretty and easy, trust me when i say when you wear them for hours a day, they get very tiring. So, I think met my goals in doing this piece, as do i think everyone else did in their fabulous performances.
With not having been dancing as much with coming to a new school and all, i would give assessment of myself of doing a very good job. Its hard to go fro, dancing everyday of the week with ballet technique class immediately following with Nutcracker rehearsals or whatever show we were doing at the moment. It was a hard transition for me starting at the beginning at the year. But, i have found other outlets of creativity for me to delve into. Sports keep me very occupied. I the only thing i regret is that if we had more time i would do another variation, perhaps Giselle, or Sleeping Beauty's Lilac Fairy.
In conclusion, I am very pleased in how this semester has gone. I am even more content that I got to do a plethora of different pieces and being able to emerse myself in many different characters lifestyles, thoughts, and environments. This audition piece to me was the start of tying together a great semester of knowledge and learning. It brought together many of the components we have talked about, and lots of the tools we learned. Also, i am thrilled that i was able to showcase my dancing to my peers and be able to have the familiarity of it.
Till next time!
